Frequently asked questions:

  • What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture ?

Both acupuncture and dry needling use thin needles, but they differ in several ways:

    Acupuncture:

    • Origins: Ancient China, based on traditional Chinese medicine.
    • Philosophy: Balances the body’s energy flow (Qi) through meridians.
    • Technique: Needles are inserted into specific points and may be manipulated with heat or electrical current.
    • Uses: Acupuncture treats various health issues such as acute and chronic pain, digestion problems, anxiety and stress.

    Dry Needling:

    • Origins: Modern Western medicine.
    • Philosophy: Focuses on anatomy and muscle function.
    • Technique: Needles are inserted into muscle knots or tight areas to relieve pain and improve function.
    • Uses: Common in physical therapy and sports medicine for muscle pain and dysfunction.
  • Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are much smaller and thinner than syringes. Often, you won’t feel the needle’s insertion due to their thin and gentle nature. Once a needle reaches its intended depth, you may feel a mild, dull ache or a slight tingling sensation that is called Qi sensation. This sensation indicates that the treatment is working and the acupuncture point is being activated. While the treatment isn’t intended to hurt, if you experience significant discomfort, please inform your practitioner so they can adjust or remove the needles.

  • Can I use my private health for my consultation with an acupuncturist?

Yes, initial and follow up consultations are claimable through private health, if you have acupuncture as part of your extra’s cover. The rebate amount will vary depending on your level of cover. Please contact your private health fund to see what rebate you are entitled to.

  • Does your practice offer the Medicare care plan program?

Yes, however unfortunately acupuncture therapies are not claimable by Medicare under the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan.
